JACS: Scientists make a chemical reaction between xenon gas and water

Xenon is best known for two things. It is the only chemical element that begins with the letter X. It is also a member of the inert gas family. In addition, why the amount of xenon in the atmosphere is much lower than the theoretical value is still an important geological mystery.

For decades, chemists and physicists have been trying to reduce the "nobleness" of xenon, forcing it to combine with ordinary substances and elements. Since Neil Bartlett obtained the first xenon compound, xenon hexafluoroplatinate in 1962, scientists have produced about 80 xenon-containing substances. The recent research direction in this field is to insert xenon atoms into water molecules, which helps to unravel the mystery that xenon disappears from the atmosphere.

In a new study published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Leonid Khriachtchev and colleagues at the University of Helsinki in Finland obtained a new xenon compound HXeOXeH, in which two xenon atoms are combined with one oxygen atom. Khriachtchev said that this is the smallest neutral molecule known to contain two xenon atoms.

In 1999, chemists had ordered water and solid xenon to react under ultraviolet light, inserting a single xenon atom into a water molecule, and produced a very active group molecule HXeO. In the new study, Khriachtchev et al. Used a previous technology to insert xenon atoms into acetylene to form HXeCCXeH, and found that HXeO molecules can react with another xenon atom and hydrogen to form HXeOXeH.

Khriachtchev believes that it is important to discover that the HXeO group can continue to react with rare gas atoms. He was also surprised to see that the new HXeOXeH molecule is very stable-only decomposes at temperatures above 70K. Another way to maintain unstable molecules without ultra-low temperature is to pressurize. The researchers said that if HXeOXeH can exist under such conditions, it is possible to explain the "disappearing xenon" problem. Khriachtchev said that people do not know the location of xenon on the earth. One explanation is that xenon gas is concentrated in the earth's crust in the form of minerals. However, Khriachtchev emphasized, "I'm not saying that xenon must be combined with water, but there is a small possibility that it should be studied."

Female sunglasses, according to the women's fashion collocation, highlight the indispensable ornaments, this kind of sunglasses have a variety of materials, the most commonly used in three kinds of metal, acetate, plastic. Each type of material is different and the style is different. It is also a kind of glasses that can block the sun's light in the strong light protection of the eyes of the products can block ultraviolet and infrared, while the color of the external environment does not change, only light intensity changes, play the protection of the eye.
