3D Print Portal Game Sentinel Turret

3D Print Portal Game Sentinel Turret

There are too many examples of 3D printing of classic characters in anime games. Recently, a 3D image called StephenGioiosa printed the ApertureScience Sentinel, which is one of the game's iconic turrets. This is his first 3D printing, and the details of the turret's arm and built-in motion sensor are shown.

Mechanical engineering student Gioiosa said he has been obsessed with Portal since he first played the original game. The sentinel turret he tried to reproduce was made by virtual game company ApertureScience. They have always been a favorite of Gioiosa, and he is happy to have the opportunity to have his own real version.

The only requirement for a university lecture is that it must use 3D printing technology and Arduino hardware. Arduino is a dedicated open source computer hardware and software company, project and user community. It designs and manufactures single-board microcontrollers and microcontroller suites for building digital devices and interactive objects.

Arduino is perfect for the Sentry turret project, as the use of Arduino hardware will allow the turret to combine similar functionality with the original game version, not just the backbone of 3D printing. Gioiosa's three main requirements for the project were that the turret's arm could be ejected, it would be able to speak, and a proximity sensor could be used.

Most designs are done using the Solidworks software program, which is freely accessible through Gioiosa. Four MG996R digital alloy equipping servers were used to move the turret in the way he wanted, from a Bluetooth radio radio. 3D printing jobs are relatively simple but time consuming, print out many different parts, and then do some extensive post-processing tasks.

Gioiosa's initial concept for the turret is that it will include a webcam to track the movement of people around. He plans to use the motion tracking software OpenCV to control the system, and the laser on the turntable is guided by the information sent by the camera. This is a very difficult task for Arduino hardware, and future turret upgrades will use RaspberryPi hardware.

In the end, the best way he decided to track the movement was to use the HC-SR04 proximity sensor. This ultrasonic motion sensor is capable of detecting its distance, but is limited to 30 degrees of vision and can only detect proximity on a straight line. A series of PIR sensors may be integrated to map the turret in multiple dimensions.

Once the server is connected and connected to the 6xAAA battery power pack, all that is required is to upload the Arduino's relatively simple pre-written software code. The turret is arranged to track motion from a distance of between 150 cm and 300 cm. If it is not detected within a 300 cm radius, the turret will scan the room 5 times and then close. If anything close to the turret is 150 cm, its arm will start to spur with a spray motion, accompanied by sound. This dynamic will be a skilled portal franchise player.

Gioiosa's replica turret is an impressive real-life tribute to his passionate game, and the first 3D printing/Arduino project is truly a huge success, promising great things in the rest of the course. He hopes to continue using this technology in the future and describes the process of using 3D printed sentinel turrets as a "learning experience."
