New Multilayer Co-Extrusion Barrier Technology

Commonly used high barrier packaging materials are aluminum foil, nylon, polyester, polyvinylidene chloride and so on. With the improvement of food protection requirements, new high barrier plastic packaging materials are becoming more and more widely used. The use of high-strength and high barrier plastics can not only improve the protection of foods, but also reduce the amount of plastics used when packaging equal amounts of foods.

Recently, EMS introduced a new structure of multi-layer bottles with a barrier layer that can be directly in contact with the packaging. The barrier material is the new high barrier nylon Grivory G21 introduced by the company.

Grivory G21 is an amorphous semi-aromatic nylon material developed by EMS-GRIVORY. This structured nylon material has excellent barrier properties for many components such as oils, waxes, solvents, fragrances, alcohol, and various vitamins. This material has passed FDA certification and can be safely in contact with food, medicines, beverages, etc. Therefore, it is widely used in various fields requiring high barrier packaging, such as food, beverages, beer, cosmetics and other industries.

Grivory G21 can be in direct contact with the packaging

Due to the unique barrier properties of the new product, plastic bottles blown with this product can be used instead of the 6-layer composite EVOH barrier bottle with significant cost advantages. The bottle structure is 4 layers: the outermost layer is a polyolefin layer, and the middle is the return layer and the bonding layer respectively, while the Grivory G21 is usually used as the innermost layer of the package and is in direct contact with the package. Compared with EVOH, Grivory G21 is superior to EVOH in terms of moisture absorption and temperature impact on barrier properties. The barrier properties of Grivory G21 are better with increasing humidity, which is one of the important factors that can directly contact with the contents.

Good UV-blocking properties are another advantage. Grivory G21 has a good resistance to ultraviolet radiation, its UV resistance can reach 300nm, can be used to process transparent packaging bottles with 300nm UV resistance. There is also a kind of fluorescence that may often affect the contents during storage, and its wavelength is rather special. Grivory G21 also has good barrier properties to this wavelength of light.

In addition to its use as a barrier material for multi-layer co-extruded bottles, Grivory G21 has also been successfully applied in a variety of composite barrier films and other applications requiring high barrier packaging.
