New Process for Producing Propylene from Methanol in Natural Gas

Lurgi has developed a process for producing propylene from natural gas methanol, making methanol available as an alternative raw material for the production of propylene, which is usually produced from petroleum. The process has been validated on demonstration units. feasibility. Methanol is converted to dimethyl ether, unreacted methanol and steam under the action of a catalyst. This mixture then produced propylene in a fixed bed reactor at a pressure of 420 to 490°C, 1.3 to 1.6 bar, with a yield of about 70%. The fixed-bed reactor uses a zeolite catalyst produced by the company Sud Chemie, and this catalyst can be regenerated with 21% nitrogen in the field at the same temperature and pressure as the reactor. Part of the unreacted raw material is recycled back to the process inlet. In order to verify the quality of propylene, Borealis's Borstar technology was used to polymerize propylene at Borealis' R&D center and then thermoformed into plastic cups. Borstar is a dual-model process, including closed-circuit and gas-phase reactors, using a patented Ziegler-Natta catalyst. It produces a wider range of polypropylenes with higher yields and a more balanced function than conventional materials. The process will be put into industrial applications after the pilot test. If the Lurgi company's production cost is less than 80 US dollars / t Mega Methanol technology, its investment repayment period is expected to be 2.5 to 3.5 years.
